Introducing the world’s first curved auto-darkening filter (ADF) with the 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet G5-02. Utilizing the new 3M™ Speedglas™ Curved Glass Technology, its shape follows your head’s curvature and expands the range of your peripheral vision. Designed for specialist TIG welders, the G5-02 helmet sets a new world standard for precision ADF viewing. This is the helmet for welders doing high-performance, critical work.

High-end professional welders can now more clearly see both their welds and the activity to either side of them with the world’s first curved auto-darkening filter (ADF): the 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet G5-02.  Designed for highly-precise TIG welding, the G5-02 ADF can nevertheless be used in all arc welding processes by welders who appreciate its curved design, wide views, 2.5 light state, low weight, and slim helmet design.

Curved ADF Offers Wide View of Work Area

With its ground-breaking curved shape, the G5-02 auto-darkening filter follows the curvature of your head and the range of your peripheral vision. The curved ADF allows for a slimmer helmet design with increased coverage on the sides of your head. The combination of the curved filter and slimmer helmet greatly reduces “rear view” reflections and other distracting lights inside the helmet, giving welders clarity that previously could require use of a shroud. Since the G5-02 filter follows the curved shape of your head, both the ADF and the helmet’s centre of gravity are closer to your head for a more comfortable distribution of weight.

“We’ve been working on a curved ADF for more than two decades,” says Stefan Henriksson, 3M Welding Eye & Face Product Manager.

“We tested — and rejected — curved ADFs made with plastic substrates. We have found that plastic has low heat resistance and is permeable, absorbing contaminates that reduce filter visibility and longevity. Of all the materials we tested, we could not find anything that outperformed glass.”

The glass used in the G5-02 filter is actually extremely flexible. And the ADF is certified using the same, standardized impact resistance tests used for traditional flat ADFs: The welding filter and protection plate meet EN166:F and EN175.F, meaning resistance to high speed particles at up to 45m/s.

With advanced electronics and four arc sensors, the G5-02 auto-darkening filter works with all arc welding processes but is especially capable of reliable switching during very steady state TIG welding, according to the new pr ISO 16321 “TIG+” standards.

The G5-02 also includes the very popular 3M Natural Colour Technology, so welders perceive colours more realistically. The ADF’s control panel has been redesigned to be more intuitive and faster to use. And if needed, users can now lock in any of the ADF’s shades, essentially turning the ADF into a passive filter at a given shade.

Slimmer, Sleeker Helmet

The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet G5-02 was completely redesigned to take advantage of the new curved ADF. Its slim, streamlined design makes it easier for welders to enter tight workspaces without the helmet “catching” on surrounding objects. Previously, you had to compromise: either a slim helmet or a wide view. With the curved G5-02 ADF, there are no compromises.

3M Connected Equipment App

The G5-02 ADF is Bluetooth enabled:  you can securely pair your smartphone to your ADF using the 3M Connected Equipment App. You can then use your phone to program up to four memory modes, each with its own settings for dark shades, sensitivity, and delay. The app lets you easily record your maintenance log for your welding helmet and well as access User Manuals and Parts Lists.

Complement Your Welding Experience With Personal Protective Equipment From 3M™

Environments contain different hazards and risks, and no two workplaces are the same. 3M offer a wide range of Personal Protective Equipment to keep you safe at work. From respiratory protection to eyewear and hearing protection, 3M solutions allow you to select the level and type of protection, comfort, style and maintenance requirements you need to work safely, comfortably and effectively.

Filtering facepiece respirators (FFR) are ideal for use in most applications where wearers require particulate protection e.g. dusts and mists. Filtering facepiece respirators are lightweight and maintenance-free, fitting underneath welding shields. Filtering Facepiece Respirators are available in a choice of cup-shaped or flat fold options, valved or unvalved and also with the option to protect against ozone and nuisance levels of organic vapours and acid gases.

Reusable respirators offer protection against particulates, gases and vapours and combinations of the two. They can be cleaned, stored and reused provided they are in good condition. With a choice of integrated or replaceable filters, certain reusable respirators can be used under G5-02.

Hearing protection must be right for you and your situation. For safety, productivity and comfort, it must reduce noise by the right amount, not too little and not too much. 3M can provide solutions for different individuals with a wide range of earplugs for use with G5-02.
