The month of July brings in a meaningful chance for collective change – Plastic Free July. Launched in Australia in 2011, this worldwide initiative has motivated millions across the world to consciously reduce their single-use plastics. Around 430 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced every year. Each July, individuals and organisations come together to make a real difference for our environment by choosing to refuse or reduce plastic products.
The initiative began as a simple challenge and has grown into a worldwide movement, engaging over 100 million participants in 190 countries, with a goal to raise awareness of plastic pollution and encourage the development of eco-friendly habits that will continue to support the environment well beyond the month. Plastic Free July helps inspire everyone to make small, sustainable changes – such as choosing re-usable bags, bottles, and containers – that add up to a significant positive impact. By inspiring individual action, it contributes to less waste, protects wildlife and oceans, and helps drive broader change in organisations and policies toward a more sustainable future.
Plastic Bag Free Day
Within the broader goal of Plastic Free July, we also observe International Plastic Bag Free Day on 3rd July. This specific day serves as an important reminder of one of the most universal and damaging forms of plastic pollution – the single-use plastic bag.
National Marine Week
Concurrent to Plastic Free July’s focus on reducing plastic, the UK celebrates National Marine Week from 26th July to 10th August. This extended period is dedicated to highlighting the incredible biodiversity of our marine environments and the critical need for their protection.
Our Role in the Movement
Participating in Plastic Free July, and supporting the aims of Plastic Bag Free Day and National Marine Week, is easier than we might think. It’s not about perfection overnight, but about easy, incremental changes. Here are some practical steps we can take:
- Remove Single-Use-Plastic: Our Cleanline Eco Sachets are a perfect replacement for those ready-to-use trigger spray chemicals. Simply add one sachet to the accompanying bottle, add water and shake! Once empty, you can re-use the bottle time and time again.
- Embrace re-usable products: Many of our Hi-Vis and Workwear clothing ranges are certified washable, improving the longevity whilst remaining safe.
- Shop consciously: Look for products manufactured with GRS recycled material such as Leo Ecoviz. Replace products traditionally made with plastic, such as wet wipes, with alternative materials such as our plastic-free Cleanline Eco Ultra-One Wipe made from viscose material.
By consciously opting out of single-use plastics, we can contribute to cleaner streets, healthier oceans, and ultimately thriving communities. Plastic Free July, International Plastic Bag Free Day and the celebration of National Marine Week provide the ideal time and avenue to reflect on our consumption habits, and actively participate in creating a more sustainable future for all.
Share your plastic-free journey with colleagues. A ripple effect can lead to significant change.
